Does the VRChat SDK support Unity 6?
Not yet. VRChat moved its client to Unity 6 in release 2026.3.3 on 2 October 2026, but the official SDK still targets Unity 2022.3.22f1. VRChat asks creators not to move SDK projects to Unity 6 until it announces support.
VRCForward is an independent project that fills that gap for avatars. It isn't made or supported by VRChat, so report problems with it on VRCForward's GitHub.
What does VRCForward do?
VRCForward is a Unity editor package for VRChat avatar projects in Unity 6. You keep using Build & Test and Build & Publish in the normal VRChat SDK panel. VRCForward prepares the avatar inside the SDK's own build pipeline, as the SDK builds the avatar's AssetBundle. Your source assets and quality settings stay as you authored them.
It also lets avatars use Unity 6 features: Audio Random Containers, mip limits on texture arrays and signed (negative) texture data.
Is VRCForward a fork or patch of the VRChat SDK?
No. You install the official VRChat Base and Avatars SDK 3.10.5 or 3.10.6 as usual, and VRCForward doesn't change the SDK's files. It joins the build through the SDK's own build callbacks, and any SDK value it adjusts for a build is put back afterwards.
Can I upload avatars from Unity 6?
Yes. Build & Publish in the VRChat SDK panel uploads the avatar the usual way. Build & Test copies it to your local VRChat client on Windows or Linux/Proton. Local testing needs a VRChat client on the same Unity version as the editor.
Does it work for VRChat worlds?
No. VRCForward is for avatars only. It works with the Avatars SDK and doesn't prepare world builds.
Which versions do I need?
- Unity 6000.0.67f1 with Windows Build Support (Mono)
- VRChat Base + Avatars SDK 3.10.5 or 3.10.6
- For Modular Avatar projects: Modular Avatar 1.18.7 and NDMF 1.14.8
On other Unity or SDK versions, ordinary SDK builds keep working, and an avatar that needs VRCForward tells you which resource needs which versions.
How do I install it?
VRCForward is a VPM package (io.github.pandaxeyed.vrcforward). In VCC or ALCOM, add https://pandaxeyed.github.io/vpm/index.json under Settings › Packages › Add Repository, then add VRCForward to your Unity 6 project. Without VCC or ALCOM, add the .tgz from the latest release with + › Add package from tarball… in Unity's Package Manager.
Starting from scratch? The Unity 6 starter project on the same release includes VRCForward and locks VRChat Base + Avatars SDK 3.10.6 in its Packages/vpm-manifest.json.
How do I move a Unity 2022 avatar project to Unity 6?
Back up the project first. In VCC, register Unity 6 under Settings › Unity Editors, then open the project's Change Unity Version dialog, turn on Show all installed Unity Versions and pick Unity 6 under Other versions. With VRChat Base + Avatars SDK 3.10.5 or 3.10.6 in the project, add VRCForward.
Can I turn VRCForward off?
Yes. Choose Disable VRCForward in a notice, or turn Enable VRCForward off under Project in the VRChat SDK › VRCForward window. That stops avatar preparation, edit checks and local test delivery.
